David Cohen's program considers the individual dog's temperament, stage of development and intended role. An active family companion and a prospect for future working tasks may need different experiences. Their training should reflect that.
OBEDIENCE THAT CONNECTS TO EVERYDAY LIFE
Good obedience is more than performing a behavior in one familiar place. A useful foundation helps the dog understand its handler, respond to clear communication and stay engaged as its surroundings change.
Depending on the dog's readiness, that work may include attention, recall foundations, position changes, lead manners and impulse control. Progress comes from clear expectations, appropriate repetition and experiences the dog is ready to handle.
CONFIDENCE WITHOUT CONSTANT EXCITEMENT
A dog should be able to investigate something unfamiliar, recover from a distraction and return its attention to the handler. Confidence develops through suitable experiences with surfaces, sounds, movement and everyday environments.
The ability to relax matters too. We value the transition from engagement to calm because a useful dog needs both. Activity and control belong in the same foundation.
FOUNDATIONS FOR FUTURE WORK
For suitable prospects, development may introduce foundations relevant to scent detection, tracking, retrieving, sport or protection work. The work is selected around the dog, with an emphasis on engagement and control.
Early foundations do not establish that every puppy will qualify for every working role. Temperament, maturity, training and individual progress determine how a prospect develops. Discuss your intended role with us before selecting a dog or planning its training.
